Chapter 11

"What do you mean, you can track them? You're a smart kid, Sasha, but--"

"Cell phones." Sasha held up his own phone to demonstrate for his grandfather. "GPS locators."

"Michael told everyone to stay off those things except for an emergency--"

"They don't have to use them. As long as they're *on*, I can tell where everybody is." Sasha allowed himself a bashful smile when he saw how impressed Walter was.

"Wow. You really are your father's son."

"Thanks."

"Remind me to have you program my VCR."

"Umm...they have digital recorders now, Grandpa."

"Don't be fresh."

"Nikita Jones. Kinda trips liltingly off the tongue, doesn't it?"

"Not really," Nikita replied shortly. Was there something about being Head of Comm that made people dysfunctional? Everything about the young man rocking back and forth on his heels made her cringe inside. He was lucky that loaded weapons were collected and accounted for after each mission.

"Still got a headache?"

"Yes," she snapped.

"I've got a cure for that."

Of course he did. But if he said one more word, she was going to shove the flat of her hand into his face and rearrange his boyishly handsome features.

She frowned and studied him more closely. He took that as an invitation and sat on the edge of her desk. But she was too preoccupied to notice. He looked almost...familiar.

Trying to remember made her head pound. But she could feel the memory tantilizingly just out of reach.

"You're dying to go out with me, aren't you?"

That lopsided grin begged for a smashing backhand. But she was still trying to puzzle out who he was and why he seemed so dreadfully...familiar.

"You're a bit young for me," she finally said. He was. Too young. Old enough to be her--

Her mind skidded to a halt as it often did when confronted with something this difficult.

"Go away. Go away now," she cried.

He popped up like the proverbial jack-in-the-box. For a second, she thought she saw real fear in his dark eyes. But it was quickly masked, then gone for good.

Suddenly she was the one who was afraid. She still didn't know who he was, but she had found out one thing. She had secrets. Secrets that could be dangerous to remember around the wrong people.
